The mathematician of finance

25 years in the markets. Today I explain them with numbers.

I'm Basilio Mijailidis, a stock market finance specialist. I have traded international markets since 2001. I hold a bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics and Computing and I'm a Master's candidate in Stock Market Finance, both from UNAM. I teach investing with a method: measure the risk before chasing the return.

My story

I made my first trade in 2001, buying EUR/USD when the euro had only just started circulating. I watched it climb to levels close to 1.60, saw the Bank of Japan's interventions, and worked in a market where everything was analysis, with no social media in between.

In 2006 I met Don Sioma Neiman, a Holocaust survivor and businessman, who became my mentor. From him I learned what has served me most in the markets and in life: never give up.

In 2007 and 2009 I created my own websites, SilexForex and Eparkia, to attract clients. I programmed the second one myself and learned to rank it on Google's first page. Over the years I understood that what separates those who survive in the markets from those who don't is not intuition: it's method. That's why, in 2011, I enrolled at UNAM to study Applied Mathematics and Computing.

Today I teach in-person trading and finance courses in Mexico City, I have been a teaching assistant in Actuarial Science classes at UNAM, and I share what I know on YouTube and on my blog, always with the numbers in plain sight.

Why I teach

I started teaching before I knew I was teaching. In 2001, at 21 and without a degree, my job was to interview actuaries, economists and engineers to build Forex sales teams. Every Monday I explained from scratch how the market works and how money is made or lost in it. At 22 I was already training the team leaders of my own company, and with every client I ended up giving a small class so they understood what they were doing with their money.

In 2011 I entered UNAM at 30. My classmates were 18 and asked me to explain what the market, finance or gold were. Halfway through the program I thought about dropping out, but an algebra professor convinced me to continue and showed me that teaching mathematics was also a path. I graduated through the Diploma program in Finance and Computational Techniques, where I discovered how well my degree and investment portfolios complemented each other, and where I met Dr. Robert Hernández, who encouraged me to enter the Master's program in Stock Market Finance.

Since 2001 I've seen it again and again: those who understand the market make better decisions. That's why I teach today.

How I work

  • σ before μ

    Risk first

Before talking about how much you could make, we measure how much you could lose.

  • f(x) visible

    Numbers in plain sight

Every idea comes with its formula and an example you can reproduce.

  • E[R] ≠ promise

    No promises of returns

This is financial education, not trading signals or personalized advice.
